Final supporters
We the undersigned, residents of Sharon, Massachusetts, are in support of Sharon adopting a SMART (Save Money and Reduce Trash) program like 140+ other towns in Massachusetts. The purpose of this program is to address concerns relating to:
- Sustainability. Less solid waste would be generated.
- Economics. A modest trash reduction of 25% (SMART programs often do better than this) would reduce Sharon’s disposal cost by $81,000/yr.
- Equity. Like a utility, if a household generates less, it would pay less.
- Public health. Emissions of hazardous air pollutants, heavy metals, and toxic soot from incineration would be reduced.
- Safety. Truck drivers would be safer by using automated trash collection.
A SMART program would provide every household with a free standard 35 gallon cart for weekly automated trash collection to complement the existing 95 gallon recycling carts. Residents are encouraged to recycle more, compost, and reduce waste generated. Overflow trash options would be available for purchase.

Fantastic idea! The average American throws away about 4.3 pounds for trash per day. By getting rid of these disposable practices, we can change our mindset to become more conscious consumers.
My family already produces less trash than most but would like to do better. We would especially love to see more incentives and support for composting from the town. It would be a nice plus to pay less for pickup if we produce less trash, but we are most concerned about environmental impact. Would love to see more done to educate young kids about impact of trash waste - my kids are 3 and 5 and I think they start forming habits this early that will impact their generation as a whole.
We throw out so little because we recycle everything and have a compost container. Some weeks we have just one small bag of trash that weighs almost nothing. We don't need a huge cart. Some weeks I fill up a garbage can of trash that I pick up as I walk with friends. Can you look into 2 or 3 different sizes of carts that would cost different amounts for the many small households in Sharon?
I liked the idea immediately and fully support the program. If the program succeed, I will pay less for trash than people who do not care about recycle. There are benefits in recycling and managing waste.
Love this whole idea. . . I hope it goes through so we can take what I see as the next logical step and consider curbside compost pickup!

Sharon should be leading in sustainability not catching up! This is one easy step the town can take to achieve a smaller carbon footprint and educate people about consumption. Kudos for getting this on our radar.
