Defend the Academic Freedom in Norwegian Universities Recently the Security Service of Norwegian Police, PST has deported an Iranian Student, Shahram Yazdanpanah. Shahram came to Norway last year and attended Norwegian language course with his wife in Narvik. He had planed to start a Master Degree in August 2009 within Satellite Technology in Narvik Engineering School. After receiving the shocking news of deportation Shahram suggested to start another neutral program within Industrial Technology. But Norwegian PST denied him this choice too! PST claims that the decision to deport Iranian student is a kind of preemptive action to stop him from possibly using his acquired knowledge within the Iranian Nuclear and Missile Program. We oppose this deportation decision and consider the reasons given by Norwegian PST as an overreaction and connecting it to a three years old United Nation resolution is mainly baseless. This act of PST i clearly degrading the principle of academic freedom. We believe that this has a severe depressive and a destructive effect to Shahram as well for many other foreign students studying or planing to study in a Norwegian university. The right and freedom to choose an academic carrier is obviously a reserved right to any individual regardless race or religion. It should fully be respected by any authority, and only be regulated by academic standards of the involved university or any educational institution. We want that the responsible authorities in Norwegian PST reconsider this decision and make it possible for Shahram to return to Narvik and continue his studies within his desired field. Furthermore the Norwegian PST or Ministry of education should give a list of "forbidden studies" for students from a given country making them aware of the consequences of planing an academic carrier in Norway. This petition will be sent to Security Service of Norwegian Police(PST), Ministry of education, and Narvik University College. If you support our effort to preserve an individual's freedom and right to choose an academic carrier please add your signature below. Links to the story are listed on the right side of this page.

The growth of this petition reached a point that forces a formal response from the institution. I am currently finalizing a letter to the university administration to demand a review of the criteria used for these deportations.

Total madness. How can a few classes at narvik engineering school endanger national security? let him finish his degree.

Heartbreaking for him and his wife. Imagine moving your whole life here just to be kicked out for no good reason.

This makes our universities look bad. We need to be open to the world not blocking people from classes.

This is totally ridiculous. A master degree in industrial tech is not a threat to anyone. Let the guy study.

So unfair. Norway should be a place where people can come to learn and grow. Shame on the PST for this overreach.
