After operating in the town of Perth Ontario for 37 years, 8 in the current location, Shadowfax decided to spruce up their storefront with their trademark colours of purple and orange, and threw in a splash of green in honour of the founder, Wendy Laut. They hired a paint expert who did a beautifully professional job, as you can see in the photo. The results were certainly eye-popping, but the paint expert advised that as the high-quality paint cured and endured the weather, it would become more muted over time. An expenditure of this nature needs to last for several years.
The Town of Perth has advised Shadowfax that the paint colours do not conform to the requirements of the downtown Heritage by-law, and that they must repaint the storefront in more muted colours.
Shadowfax believes that the old and new can co-exist, and that the new paint adds to the beauty of the downtown while attracting customers off the thoroughfare of Gore Street to the store on Foster Street. The communities of customers and small business owners have been strongly supportive of Shadowfax, suggesting that the paint should be able to stay, and that the Town Council should consider broadening the permitted local Heritage colour palette.
Please sign this petition if you agree that the new paint should be given time to cure and weather, and that the Town of Perth should take this opportunity to consult with the small businesses who are the backbone of downtown Perth with regard to the allowable Heritage colours.

In a world where horrible things are happening every day, we should be embracing these happy, joyful colours! When I drive by Shadowfax and see these bright happy colours, I’m immediately cheered up, even if it’s for just one moment!
We have a cottage in Perth and choose to do all our shopping there for cottage trips, as well as I make day trips a number of times each year for other reasons. I enjoy the Shadowfax and really like the new look. I think it should be allowed to stay that way. Thanks.
I met an elderly lady with a small butterfly tattoo on her leg. She told me that she got it on her 80th birthday ‘to show the young ones i am still alive and kicking!’ Perth could use the same attitude. A splash of colour could give the old town a little kick!
Loosen up Perth! It's neon signs and tacky chain stores we need to protect our downtown from... not classic Perth stores like Shadowfax. The colours add an interesting flair to a street that has suffered many store closures in recent years.
The colour of the store is alright just as it is. One must remember that heritage colours were often very bright. Heritage is important, however having businesses open is also important. One cannot and should not arbitrarily chose one to the detriment of the other.
If it is an "expensive" paint you will be paying for it not to fade so that argument does not hold water. Purple does not go with red brick and lime green is not pleasing to the eye from an architectural point of view. The placing of inappropriate "corporate" colour schemes on mainstreets is the reason heritage guidelines were formulated in the first place otherwise every street across the country would be the same commercial advertising strip. If the shopfront does not comply with heritage bylaws it must be re-done or a precedent will be established and the next eyesore could be a McDonalds or a Walmart, they have the corporate legal expertise to walk all over Perth council to get what they want. Be very careful what you sign for on this petition or a big can of worms could be opened.
Perth council needs to update this bylaw. These colours look great!

So the bright blue of Balderson Kids is acceptable? So is the bright red of the Skye Dragon and the green of Burns Jewellers? It is totally unfair that they allow other businesses to paint the colours they want, yet they have an issue with yours!
