Have you ever felt like an "other" on the SFSU campus due to a disability, your size, or maybe something as common as left handedness? This feeling is valid, and more common then is discussed as an issue. 30+% of the student body in one way or another needs alternative accommodations regarding seating. Universal access means everyone has a seat that they can focus in, feel comfortable, and feel represented. I personally have watched fellow peers be forced to stand all class due to lack of universal seating accommodating all sized students. I've also seen a peer of mine in a wheel chair write on her knees because there was no desk for her chair to roll up to. I have personally experienced for months sitting in chair desk combo seats that are for right handed people and as a left handed person that causes me some major neck and back pain. There are solutions to this issue. Solutions that have no effect on the classroom design budget. The philosophy behind this is that since 30% of the student body is considered "other bodied" or falling in some way or another outside of the atypical needs or accommodations then 30% of the seating in each classroom should account for this population. A simple solution for example would be to mix free standing desks from other classrooms that have that design with the chair desk combo seating to create a universal design classroom.
