One of the strongest impressions Iraqis had of the United States was made during the invasion when soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division saw the mayor of a city raping a boy in an alley, and immediately jumped over the side of their truck and beat the mayor down with their rifle butts. In the Islamic world, rape is used to shame and control opponents. Those soldiers did not act on orders--they didn't even wait for the truck carrying them to stop--and that willingness to do the right thing bought them the willful cooperation of the residents of the districts the 3rd ID was assigned. Protecting the innocent from the guilty gets you appreciated; contributing to corruption and protecting the criminal results in appropriate estimation of your value, as well.
This is something the United States needs to take categorical as well as specific recognition of, and act upon!

Disgraceful conduct on the army's part. not the two soldiers!! They should be exonerated and their records cleared. This is one more example of how despicable our government and the military commanders have become!!
