The First Amendment to the US Constitution states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." This clause is not only applicablt to federal government, but also state governments. The Fourteenth Amendment states: " No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States." Now, Article IV, Section 2 of the South Carolina Constitution: "No person shall be eligible to the office of Governor who denies the existence of the Supreme Being." Not only is this an absurdly outdated criterium, but it is in direct conflict with Amendments I and XIV of the US Constitution, the supreme law of the land, as established in Article VI Clause II. Therefore, we, the undersigned, petition the South Carolina state government to edit Article IV, Section 2 of its Constitution to remove the seemingly anti-Atheist and indisputably unconstitutional clause.
