One School's Trailer is a Senior Class' Treasure
For a very long time, Wiscasset High School seniors have been given the chance to earn certain privileges. These "senior" privileges are given to students have completed the following: Six community service hours per year at Wiscasset High School, a job shadow, and a job interview. Doing so would earn you the right of being able to leave school during advisory, lunch, and learning lab. You would also gain access to the senior lounge. Unfortunately, this year former location of the senior lounge has been deemed a fire hazard. Not only that, but due to 7th and 8th graders joining the school, the schedule has been changed to the point where leaving school during advisory/lunch/learning lab just isn't worth it. As a result, the class of 2016 along with the following classes will practically leave students with no senior privileges. Most of these students, including myself, have put their time into the high school, looking forward to the day that we become seniors. The fact that these privileges are either becoming unavailable or worthless due to factors out of our control (fire hazards and scheduling) is ridiculous. Due to the addition of the 7th and 8th graders, there's very few locations the students are allowed to use for a senior lounge. One of these being a stairwell. The other being a trailer near the music room. Currently, the trailer is being used for storage. With a some cleaning up, it could make a great spot for a senior lounge, or at least better than the stairwell. When the idea was brought to the principal, that the president of the student council and I, the answer was an immediate no. The reasons given were a lack of heat, space, and supervision. When we asked if we could solve the lack of heat and space, the answer was still no. This showed an obvious lack of trust. To be honest, it easy to understand her distrust with "a bunch of seniors." However this isn't some big city school where all you know about a student in there name and grade level. This is Wiscasset Middle High School, where it's easy to get to know the personalities of each student, really grow a bond with them. All we are asking for is a chance. After all this is a privilege, and if the students decide to throw that away, then take it away. It's something that the student at Wiscasset Middle High School have put their time in for, and truly deserve. Please show your support by signing the pledge. Thank you. -President of the Senior Class
