We are working on a proposal that has a chance to better our community, and we would very much appreciate it if you would read over the following, thank you. A senior service trip is what we have in mind. The goal of service trip is to allow students to apply what they have learned and use that to help out the surrounding area. The trip could be used as a senior project and made mandatory for graduation. This trip will allow seniors to grow and experience the love that is brought upon themselves when giving back to the community and helping others. A senior project like this would enable students to build deeper relationships with others in the community and make memories that will last a lifetime.

The community is always in need of a helping hand. What better people to get the job done than a senior class made up of at least 500 people. There are several surrounding companies and programs that reach out to Lindbergh every year for help from clubs like NHS and Stuco. Nevertheless, we have opportunities to do small community service projects Lindbergh has never had a chance to authorize a week long service project focusing on improvements in society. During this week students can do things like help at an animal shelter, volunteer at a retirement home, or even tutor students throughout the week. Not only does this help the community it opens up the students eyes to the world around them and the difference they can make in the world.

Building character and applying a student’s knowledge by working in the community is an extraordinary experience. The six pillars of character that Lindbergh represents could be displayed by students through volunteering. Citizenship; caring, respect, fairness, responsibility, and trustworthiness are all enhanced through service projects. School’s like SLUH for example have done this service project for many years and have received nothing but raving reviews due to the effect it has on the students and community.

There are many things to take into consideration about this type of project. Not being at school for a week could affect the amount of hours we go to school, but what if we counted it as a field trip. It is educational and teachers fill up time at the end of the year with useless activities anyways. Also accountability of the students doing the project is skeptical. Although, like programs such as NHS, hours could be recorded and verified through the organization or manager of the project. Therefore all concerns could be easily solved.

Overall a senior project would only benefit the graduating class, and Lindbergh. There is no better way to apply our knowledge we have learned throughout our high school career than to commit to a week long service project. Students will learn and experience the culture around them, and open their eyes to the surrounding community. Thank you very much for taking your time to read over our suggested proposal, and please consider the remarkable opportunity we have at hand.

Sincerely,

Megan DeGunia, Rami Issawi, Mary Claire Hogan, and Andrew Bavlsik
