Senior Class Petition
We strongly oppose the proposed changes to senior week by the Senate. However, we completely understand and agree with the need to reform senior week and eliminate certain aspects such as waterguns, paying for parking, and hiding students' personal property. We feel like the proposed rules are overly restrictive and potentially problematic. It also seems like our class is being punished for questionable actions of previous classes, and we ask that the Senate will trust us to be respectful during our senior week. Our class has always been respectful and understanding about the construction disturbing our senior year, in spite of the fact that we will not reap any of the benefits. We have no intention of planning pranks that will be overly disruptive to learning or that will make members of the community feel alienated and victimized. By cutting senior week down to one day, you are eliminating a major opportunity for the senior class to work together and bond. Additionally, having one "surprise" day of pranks will probably cause more issues that having a well-planned week. That one day will be very chaotic, and students will not be expecting that when they arrive at school. We are more than willing to compromise (limiting pranks to certain areas of the building, having stricter rules on getting pranks approved) so that our opinion will be considered. Because pranks in past years have been controversial, we will be extra diligent about making sure every aspect of our pranks has been approved by administrators.
We agree with parts of the proposal, such as improved communication between the seniors and the class dean about pranks and activities.
We are signing this petition to ask you to delay your vote to a later date (at least until next week) and consider revising the changes. We want to work with you so that senior week can be safe, but still a fun celebration for the seniors.
