This is all about a failure to properly resource building control authorities throughout the country. This act will do nothing to improve building quality and will only make building a pen pushing job instead of a skill.

The regulations should favor the self builder not the bank. Over compensating with standards that should have been in place years ago. A symptom of the "get them built "Celtic tiger" fantasy!

The freedom to build should maybe be limited to areas where important structures are not being developed. But to limit the person from building at all is a denial of the right of our own effort!

My Great grandfather built his own house in Adregole to farm Hungry Hill. As long as building control does stage inspections the self build can be as good as a main builder

i have successfully compleeted 2 self build projects in the past, adhering to all building reg's required to have a safe home. I am planning a 3rd project and want to do a 'self build' as it is something i enjoy doing. it is far more costly to imploy a contractor and even if you do you still CAN'T guarantee they will do the job right. i do believe that regulations and standards should be applied but once again this bill has been drafted with out consideration for everyone. it is clear that the regulation that the building industry is lacking is in the large scale developments and NOT one off homes.
Ragged Trousered Government ....
