We, the undersigned, urge Minister for Justice and Defence, Alan Shatter, to ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) asylum seekers are given safe, appropriate accomodation free from homophobia and persecution. We also ask that LGBT asylum seekers be given support and information to enable them to access LGBT services and networks. It is unfair that someone who has fled their native land to escape persecution, criminalisation, violence or death should continue to live in fear and isolation in Ireland. We are a compassionate nation, valuing diversity and freedo from fear and persecution. The Department of Justice has the power and the duty to realise this for all people in Ireland.
