I'm about ready to move out of SE because of the trains. They're driving me nuts. Even with my windows closed now that summer is waning. Help!!!!!

I support the quiet zone. I just moved to the Division St. area and was looking forward to being able to open my windows a crack at night instead of using A/C with this nice fall weather. Instead, I was woken up by at least 2-3 trains between 3 and 5 AM with continuous loud horn blasts that I had no way of silencing out, even with my windows closed. I was left wide awake, with no hope of getting back to sleep. I'm a psychologist and now I'm a zombie today with my clients.

I lived in the Pearl only 2-3 blocks from the train station and never had a problem because of the quiet zone. I just recently moved to SE, and had no idea the train situation was APPALLINGLY loud and awful in this neighborhood, even though I live significantly farther from a railroad then before. Pleeeease implement a quiet zone and let us live in peace!

This goes on 24x7, and sometimes the horn blasts last for a while at a time. One particularly awful instance I times at 11 minutes. This was at 7am, the first day of the time change. There's no way that was necessary, especially in a residential area.

I am very far from this train and sleep with earplugs and am still woken each night. Please let me know what else I can do to help make this stop. I believe all the pieces are in place to make this a quiet zone??

We have lived since almost 40 years in Ladd's Addition, and the train noise has always been an issue. However, in the last few years it has become extremely disturbing and overwhelming: The number, the loudness and the length of each "hoot" has been increasing; even at daytime it is more than a nuisance, and at night it is almost a terror – earplugs don't help much, and our sleep is disrupted several times. All the streets have barriers that automatically close, plus blinking lights and ringing signals, so the horn blowing is not anymore necessary as a safety measure. So something must be done about this problem – soon.

The trains disrupt the sleep of my family, including my young son. The blasts are far too frequent and too loud. If the safety measures are in place, a quiet zone should be enforced!

I ask myself at night, why should the rail business have the right to disturb thousands of people each night with their noise pollution. This seems very wrong to me. No other business has these special rights.

What was once the occasional plaintiff call of a distant train has become a constant stream of loud and prolonged wailing, and as others have noted, it is impossible to get a decent night's sleep. All the modern safety equipment is in place, so all that needs to be done is have the City tell Union Pacific to stop.

The noise caused by trains at night needs to stop ASAP. Among excuses I've seen excuses for the noise is that it's all some sort of warning for people who might be on the tracks. Seriously? If flashing red lights, lowered barriers, clanging at stops, not to mention the roar of the engines, the vibrations of the tracks, and the bright spotlight from the front of the train isn't enough warning for drunks and others on the tracks, loud blaring horns won't help. Stop the damned noise.

Should proposed coal shipments by rail (in open-air cars... but that's a separate issue) to export terminals in OR and in WA become a reality, this would make an already bad situation much worse in the absence of a quiet zone.

The train horns are really causing distruption in my families sleep. The magnitude of the noise is beyond comprehension for a neighborhood to deal with. I think tax payers if asked would contribute to whatever it takes to eliminate the noise.
