Dear Friends!
Haven't you experienced that sometimes you land up in a Govt office/dept/ bank only to be told that it is closed due to Second Saturday!
Never wondered about it and just accepted that its another of those "government" ways of working! No other way in India right!
With Modi promising "Acche Din", let us protest this crazy old residue of the British looters that they left.
Scrap "Second Saturday Holiday" ! Yes, it is one of those residues of the looters!
Second Saturday holiday tradition dates back to the days of East India Company.
The Book of Genesis in Bible says the Seventh Day or Saturday was the day for rest and worship after the six days it took God to create the World. Planet Saturn, from which the day’s name is derived, being the second largest, the second of Saturdays in a month was designated as a holiday.
There seems to be no country that follows this tradition except perhaps Israel because the Jews observe Saturdays as the day of sabbath.
The Internet question seems to take a dig at authorities and the responses it evoked matched its spirit.
When westerners were asked about this, their responses were: “I have never heard of this holiday tradition. Where do you live?”, asked a respondent while another person wondered, “Is this true? I don’t think so. In what country? I haven’t heard of this” and “Not in Canada or US so far as I know”, were some of the other responses
