CSE 170/Cogs120

We the students of CSE170/Cogs120 are seeking action by the CSE department to correct what we see as disturbing problems within our current UCSD course.

List of complaints:
-Grades based on our ability to "Guess" how our TA's will grade us
We are currently graded on our self assessments at the end of studio not by completion but by if OUR evaluation is within one point of how our TA grades us. How can we be graded on a "guess" especially taking into account the often the often ambiguous expectations presented in this class?

-Unclear expectations on assignments
The assignments do not give clear examples of what we are being graded on or what is expected from us. Despite the massive write ups for each assignment many students are left questioning what exactly each assignment is asking of them.

-Homework grades based on the lowest denominator of TA or student self assessment
Not only are we graded down for guessing incorrectly on how our TA will evaluate us. If we evaluate ourselves lower then our TA for the assignment we retain the LOWEST of the two grades. What about students with humble personalities. This system is all penalty with no reward and creates frustration among students.

-Quiz's
Questions of quiz's have been not been clear. First questions being incorrectly worded. Second not all questions seem to be over covered material or if it is, materials are so scattered over the incoherently set up website its hard to identify what one needs to study for each quiz.

-Outside the box
These points are described as going "above and beyond" and coming up with ideas beyond what is expected of us. Yet these points are included in our total possible points and score. These are advertised as extra credit for exceptional work yet treated and a necessary achievement of each assignment.
