On Thursday April 15th, 2010 during a Tea Party Protest at West Side Park in Champaign, Illinois, Mayor Jerry Schweighart stated that President Barack Obama was not an American citizen because he could not produce an birth certificate. According to Schweighart, “If you are not willing to produce an original birth certificate, then you’ve got something to hide.” In the wake of Schweighart's comments, Champaign County Board member Al Kurtz criticized the mayor for "his inability to understand the facts of the case" and called for his resignation.
