School's start at a later and healthier time.

As a high school student, I can completely say that I cannot function and/or wake up fully until about 10:30, and the class I'm in at that time doesn't even require thinking! It's Choir! Of course it requires some, but not as much as I need at 7:30 AM in geometry. Studies have shown that schools start way too early, and pushing the starting time forward would lower the obesity rate, depression, stress, anxiety, and overall happiness and health. Early start times stress anyone out, and something needs to be done about it.
- We dogo to bed early, don't use that as an excuse.
- In elementary school, school started at 9:30 and ended at 3:00. We still had time for sports, clubs, events, etc. I'm sure the problem with all the bus schedules can be fixed. The school's mess with our schedules all the time I think each county will be able to figure out how to make buses work. More buses mean more jobs for people. When both my grandparents and mom and dad were in school, it started around 8:45. Don't know why you changed it in the first place, but that show's it's not hard to make it like that again.
- I walk to school every morning and I have to leave around 6:50 to be able to get there on time, and I still barely make it. I speed walk and I still get there right before the late bell. It's pitch dark outside, I have to use my phone flashlight sometimes, I have to cross the road four times, two of which don't have crosswalks or lights. Cars probably cannot see me, and it's common sense that no kid should be forced to walk in the cold and pitch dark to something they hate in the first place.
- Not getting enough sleep causes so many things, sickness, depression, anxiety, stress, and so much more. School by itself already causes most of these things so I'm pretty sure the American Education System is trying to kill us.
- Can you imagine the increase of higher grades? Also the decrease of sad, sick, and tired teenagers?
- Are we just lazy? The answer is no. Yes, teenagers can be lazy, but this is just not healthy. Not just teenagers want late start times, but also adults. Parents, doctors, pediatricians, and more people who actually know what they're talking about have pushed for school to start at an actual reasonable and healthier times for years. If people like that who have studied they way the human body works for years think that it is unhealthy for teenagers to wake up this early and go to school, then why is the school board who knows nothing making the decision?
-“Research is clear that adolescents who get enough sleep have a reduced risk of being overweight or suffering depression, are less likely to be involved in automobile accidents, and have better grades, higher standardized test scores and an overall better quality of life,” said pediatrician Judith Owens, lead author of “School Start Times for Adolescents.”
- How about instead of complaining about, "the dumb generation" (If you think this really is the "dumb generation, I'm sorry you don't know how to use a smartphone.) how about you actually fix the problem. This won't solve everything, but it sure is a big step.
-“The evidence is clearly mounting both in terms of understanding the repercussions that chronic sleep loss has on the health, safety and performance of adolescents, and there is also really solid compelling data supporting the fact that delaying school start times is a very important intervention that can mitigate some of the impact of sleep loss,” says Dr. Judith Owens, director of sleep medicine at Children’s National Medical Center and lead author of the report.
- If schools start later, teenagers would have more time to actually eat something. Obesity rates would go down because when you don't eat for a long time but then you eat a lot, this causes your body to gain weight. And who wouldn't eat breakfast if we actually had the time to?
It's common sense to know that school's today start way too early, and it is not benefiting anyone. It's not healthy, safe, or doing any good. It's actually just making things worse. But who am I kidding? Who cares about the mental and physical health of a teenager? Who cares about fixing obesity, depression, stress, bad grades, anxiety, and more? As long as I know thata2+b2 =c2and that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell then I'm just fine.
