The current policy of the TVDSB requires that if one child in a school has a food allergy, all children are banned from bringing this food to school. We understand that food allergies are very serious, however, making every other child suffer is not acceptable. Parents have a right and responsibility to provide healthy foods for their children, which includes a balanced diet. Just about every food has the possibility to become an allergen. These allergic children must be taught how to care for their allergies and protect themselves, much like diabetic children. It is getting harder and harder to pack a kid's lunch. Children are often picky eaters by nature, and a family budget often does not include fanciful alternatives. Parents have been bullied for far to long to accomodate many when a select few are at risk. We live in a society where majority rules. There are peanuts, eggs, shellfish, kiwi, bees, pollen, cats and other allergens everywhere. Policing and controlling the masses will not assist in protecting these children in the future.
