School Counselor to School Administrator
We, the school counselors in Delaware, petition the members of the Delaware Professional Standards Board, to amend the wording in Regulation 1592: School Leader I from "teaching experience" to "educational experience." The current phrase excludes approximately 60% of the school counselors in Delaware from attaining School Leader I certification because they were not previously teachers. In accordance with the American School Counselor Association's National Model, school counselors follow a set of professional standards to deliver a school guidance curriculum, provide individual student planning, numerous responsive services and overall system support to enhance a school's overall student success and achievement. This makes them uniquely prepared to assume the role of a school administrator. By signing this petition you will be supporting our efforts to encourage the Professional Standards Board to reconsider their current "teaching experience" requirement to become more inclusive of school counselors by changing the requirement to "educational experience." While the changing of this regulation would not guarantee a school counselor an administrative position, it would allow them to take the steps necessary to attain School Leader I certification and pursue potential administrative positions.
