The L.A. Mathematics A.S. Degree Program was announced in the April 5th 2010 issue of the Binnekill ("Board approves program proposals," page 2), and was initially planned to be in place as of Fall 2010. This degree would have been distinct from the current Math & Science Degree SCCC offers at present. It was a 63 credit program, whose core curriculum would have included Calculus 1, 2, and 3, as well as Linear Algebra, some Computer Science, and would have had a much lesser focus on the Physical Sciences, as compared to the Math & Science A.S. Speaking as a student who has taken almost every college level math class SCCC has to offer, and having talked to a number of classmates in the higher level math courses, it is clear that there are many students who very much wanted the Mathematics A.S.

The problem is that it's now the end of Spring 2012, and the proposed Math Degree lies dormant, seemingly stuck in administrative process. But as this program has already been approved by the SCCC Board of Trustees, it should be in place and available to the students, as are the other two programs that they announced approval for in that same issue of the Binnekill.

SCCC has a fantastic Math department, full of extremely bright and skilled students. The faculty, adjunct and full-time professor alike, are some of the most caring and inspirational individuals to be found in the field. They are excited about what they teach, and they pass that on to their students. This is a very good thing which needs to be celebrated and honored, because so many people still fear Math in a world where it's becoming ever more imperative that it be understood. Mathematics is the basis of all other Sciences, without it they could not function. It is also an intrinsic part of music and visual art. Perhaps most importantly though, Mathematics is an expression of highly creative thought, in and of itself. It is not simply about learning how to process numeric values in useful ways, it is about expanding one’s mind to fearlessly experiment with concepts, and tirelessly look for solutions in ways that have not previously been conceived of. These are traits that our world has great need of, because we have some very formidable challenges in front of us, and they need to be met by equally formidable thinkers.

The finalization and full implementation of the L.A. Mathematics A.S. Degree Program would honor the students who recognize all this and the faculty that support them in it. In that spirit, we the undersigned humbly ask that any remaining administrative barriers be overcome and the program be made available as immediately as possible.
