Currently Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles, is considering an appeal by Augean PLC to allow the dumping of Low Level Radioactive waste in the East Northants Resource Management Facility, near Kings Cliffe, Northamptonshire.
This is concerning as the nearest facility producing this waste is over 90 miles from the site. Thereby ignoring the Proximity Principle, that all waste should be disposed of as close to where it is produced as possible, a key stone of Government policy.
This ‘principle’ is designed to cut down on carbon emissions, something this Government has promised to do.
Also, this waste will have to go near to or through many towns and villages, none of which have been told that this is going to happen.
We the undersigned, call on the Government to reject this appeal and to only allow dumping of radioactive waste within close proximity of its production.
