I’m a 72 yr old lady today . I had Uterine Fibroids in 1978 . I was told that I needed a hysterrectomy . Like a dummy I did it, trusting my doctor that he knew best . I was 33 yrs old at the time . Today I have a hard time controlling my urine, have trouble falling asleep , lower backaches , and just always feeling tired . it’s hard to stand in one place long without getting a lower backache . After reading the article I realize that most of my problems today was from taking my doctors advice . If I knew then , what I know now , I would have done things differently . I was one of the lucky ones , I had two children at that time . My advice to everyone is to think seriously about how you will feel later in life , as you age. Don’t do it ladies , find other means to help with your problem.

Patricia,I am so sorry for what you are going through. Doctors lie! I am going to see my Naturopathic doctor and get her help on my situation (doctor saying I need a hysterectomy for a poly that had pre-cancerous cells in & has already been removed). No way will they "butcher" me up! I am truly sorry for your pain and suffering......

OMG! I can't believe I found your website today! I am going through the same thing as others stated here! I recently had a period (I am 64 & long past menopause) due to Estrace cream prescribed to me by my OBGYN's nurse practioner. She said it would help return moisture to my vagina. I reluctantly took it and just taking for 2 weeks, cause the period. Well, the doctor and her nurse both stated to me the cream wasn't the cause (yes, it is according to the cream's website). Well, first the uterine biopsy which came back negative and subsequent ultrasounds found 2 uterine polyps which had "precancerous cells" found in them after removal.
Well, just went to my doctor for post-op consultation. First thing she said, well, your uterus has to come out! Your post-menopausal anyway and you really don't need it! Now, this is a female OBGYN telling me this! Well, I was totally speachless! She brings out this pamphlet (of course, it tauted the daVinci hysterectomy procedure) and stated I needed to see a OBGYN/Oncologist Doctor. My uterus did not have cancer! Oh my God! I, too, feel so alone in my battle to save my uterus, cervix and any other organ they want to remove!
Every woman facing her doctor wanting to do a hysterectomy, needs to read everything on the Hers Foundation website. I learned so much there today. I had no idea that doctors are butchering women like they are! I want to preserve my quality of life and keep my uterus. My uterus performed well giving birth to my 3 children, I never had problem period, no fibroid, no cysts---this is my first encounter with any issue with my reproductive organ. I am so upset that now I have to find a doctor that will not go this route for me. I will be contacting my doctor and getting all my recent tests so I can move on and find a doctor who believes women should keep their uterus! I'm so glad I found a group of people who understand what is going on inside my head. I just spent an entire 30 minutes trying to get the doctor to tell me exactly why I had to have everything removed. His best answer was because it was abnormal and not supposed to be there. I have a 7cm mass on one ovary, a 3 cm on the other, and evidently a 5 cm adenomyosis which no one bothered to tell me about until after I requested and read my ultrasound report! My doctor took significant time in both visits to reassure me that there is no way this is cancerous, but when he realized I was not buying into a tah bso he strongly lectured me that I have to have it all out because it might be cancer, even went as far as to give me a referral to a gyno/oncologist. I felt belittled and demeaned for having an opposing opinion and for having done my own research which led me to ask a lot of questions. I feel like I was being bullied. My story is not over just yet, I do have a moderate amount of pain and am not opposed to having medical help. But honestly why is it so hard for a doctor to understand that I'm willing to live with a little bit of pain as opposed to being castrated! If we treated men this same way how far do you think it would go? Pretty sure they'd fight with everything they had to save their gonads which is exactly what I am doing and being ridiculed for. I am experiencing this pressure and misinformation right now. Doctors found a cyst (the first I've had in my life) on my left ovary and, despite the fact that it seems to have shrunk after one month, immediately suggested a "therapeutic" total hysterectomy. I couldn't even fathom what that was supposed to mean. The young intern who screened me said "the doctor will likely suggest a therapeutic hysterectomy".
"Why?" I asked.
"Well it would save you from the chance of a cyst recurring again and also the inconvenience of menstrual cycles."
I was stunned. I said to him, "I don't think so--I just need to have the cyst removed."
He stammered after I said that before finding his pace again and went on to explain that the doctor may have to remove the entire ovary but my not wanting that procedure was something I could discuss with the doctor. He seemed surprised at my response adding that they would have to look at the cyst, do an ultrasound of their own (they were being faxed the original one that got me referred to them), and run tests before they could tell me whether I could keep the ovary or not.
When the Doctor, a man purported to be at the top of his field, came in he said virtually the same thing (mind you this was pre-exam, pre-biopsy, pre-detailed ultrasound, etc., ) adding:
"I'll have to look over your chart of course and review the results from any testing we do today...but it's best to remove the ovary and while were at it just do a hysterectomy to prevent further cysts." I repeated that I did not want a hysterectomy for "convenience".
I said "I'd rather you remove only the cyst if possible. "
His response?
"Well we will likely have to take the ovary...but what we'll do is go in test it and get the results while you are on the table. We will decide then if we need to take the entire ovary or do a total hysterectomy and the procedure will be done right away."
I didn't know how to respond. He said all of that

My doctor never discussed the any of the down side of having a hysterectomy only that this surgery was a non failure surgery and would stop my bleeding and get rid of my fibroids once and for all, if not they would just keep coming back, now with one ovary left at 47 I am in menopause which he also denied due to he says I have one ovary left and cannot go into menopause so my symptoms must be something else, he took my left ovary simply because it had a 1cm dermoid cyst that he said would give me problems in the future, he had no regard for the fact that it was working to keep me healthy more so than I am now that it is gone, I have aged 10 years if not more in the last few months since surgery on Jan 15 2015, dry skin, hair, wrinkles I did not have, vaginal dryness, loss of muscle tone I had plenty of before surgery, weakness all over, constant feeling of going to the bathroom, night sweats hot flashes, anxiety, zero sex drive, don't even care about the same things I used to, all because I was misinformed and trusted this person calling himself a doctor, so now what are we to do? they just keep getting paid while women keep getting butchered. What are we all going to do about it?

I agreed to one procedure only and the doctor changed procedure I believe to teach a fellow or resident which is not something I would ever agree too. She denied me of my religious belief by taking my uterus w/out my permission.

My doctor pushed this surgery so hard like it was no big deal. Ten years later and my hormones are a wreck and my sex life is basically gone. Wish I knew what I know now back then.
