On September 3, 2014, with no advance notice, parents dropping off their children at St. Mark the Evangelist C.S in Whitby, Ontario were told that they were not allowed to enter the yard. Instead, a handful of staff would be supervising the children in the yard. Children were taken from their parents, many on their 2nd ever day of school, screaming and crying. While the one gate of the yard was being monitored by a staff member, the opposite side has a small fence with an 8 to 12 foot opening, which is unsupervised and through which children and adults are free to pass.

This petition serves to Say No to the St. Mark's Policy until such time as a) a secure fence has been erected around the entire school yard, b) supervision that the parents deem adequate is placed on duty in the yard, and c) proper notice has been given to parents.

It is time that we stop trying to protect our children from the wrong people....their parents!

Updates

September 4, 2014

I have been hearing from dozens of you about the chaos at drop off and the safety risks posed by that open fence. Call the principal today to demand that they close the yard gaps and let us walk our children to their lines. Post this link on your Facebook wall so more families hear what is really happening at the gate.

September 4, 2014

The administration can no longer ignore this outcry because our numbers show how many families refuse to accept this unsafe policy. Call the school board office today to demand they secure the perimeter and keep the gates open for parents.

TOTAL NONSENSE. You cant just change the rules overnight and expect kids to be okay with it. Fix the gate and talk to us first! Ridiculous.

My son was so upset by this. He is only 4 and doesnt understand why I cant walk him to the line. This isnt safe at all and they need to fix that hole in the fence before someone gets out.

Thanks for posting Wendy! It would seem that the changes made today fall outside of the theme of the policy you posted altogether. Specifically the phrases "The responsibility for each student's safe arrival is primarily that of the parent/guardian." and "Schools, parents/guardian(s), Catholic School Councils and the community shall work cooperatively for the successful development, implementation and maintenance of the safe arrival program."

This DCDSB policy was posted by Wendy Mueller earlier today: http://dcdsb.ca/images/DCDSB/CEC/lizbeckstead/604_Access_to_School_Premises_-_FINAL.pdf. This policy, which was recently amended in May of this year, specifically states: "The following persons are permitted to be on school premises:  a person enrolled as a pupil at that school  a parent or guardian of such a pupil" I will be printing a copy of this policy, to bring with me tomorrow morning when I enter the school yard to drop off my children.
