The Board of Education finally crawled back from their disastrous plan to partner with the NSBLC. They heard us loud and clear that our students will not be segregated or treated like burdens. Keep your eyes on the board because we will not let them try this discriminatory garbage again.

The Board of Education for Allendale Public Schools recently proposed joining the NSBLC (https://nationalschoolboardleadershipcouncil). Membership in NSBLC will be harmful for many students in our district.
Among other things, NSBLC advocates for separating students who are "learning challenged" from their peers and placing them in separate, exclusive classrooms or entirely different schools so they can "pursue their efforts to become a benefit to society." The NSLBC firmly believes that the practice of including learning challenged students in traditional classrooms unduly strains resources, negatively impacting students who are not learning challenged. This means any student who receives any sort of accommodation (additional direction, extra time for tests, quiet study space, etc) for any reason is perceived as a burden on the classroom and is at risk of being excluded from a classroom of their peers.
The Board of Education will be discussing this proposal on January 23, 2023 and voting on whether to move forward with this change on February 13, 2023.
To protect all students, please sign this petition. We will bring the signatures to the board's attention on February 13, 2023 to show that our community does not agree with adopting this proposal.

We just hit 100 signatures and the Board of Education needs to realize that our community rejects their discriminatory agenda. These politicians are trying to segregate our classrooms and we will not let them push students into the shadows for the sake of their budget.

This is outrageous! Students with special needs are general education students FIRST and should be treated that way. There should be NO separation. Students with special needs are not a burden and should not be treated as such.
Wow. Getting right after those pesky immigrants, aren't they? Direct quote from the NSBLC site in the "vision" section: "Our public education system is overwhelmed by the mandate forcing them to teach its curriculum in multiple languages. Non-english speaking students provide an unacceptable cost for taxpayers to bear."
This group wants to take away federal protection for students with any type of disability. FAPE isn't a suggestion, it's the law! Free and Appropriate Public Education does not include segregating students with different learning needs. If you think teachers are over burdened, try lowering class size...you don't sacrifice one group for the benefit of the other
NSBLC mischaractizes what Special Education in the classroom looks like and advocates for dangerous separation & segregation principles in public education. No community should want their public school leaders to be influenced by an organization that prioritizes one type of learner over other types of learners.
My son thrived being surrounded by peers despite having accommodations due to a brain injury. Had he been separated he would not be where he is today, in college pursuing a degree in music education. This would be detrimental to students who may need a little extra help to succeed. Say NO to NSBLC
Kids learn best with their classmates
Leave these kids alone. They are entitled to an education same as any child

I am also very concerned that one of NSBLC’s founders, Kelly Kohl, has a personal social media account in which she repeatedly denigrates public schools. Why on earth would a public school board join this organization?
