SAY NO TO INCINERATORS

  • We are a group of students who are aware of the dangers that pollution is causing to our air in Lebanon, and the dangers of the garbage crisis that hit our country in 2015.
  • We are also aware that the government hasn’t put any laws and regulations and did not take appropriate actions to manage solid waste in the country. Consequently, they were using landfills to maximum capacity and dumps which is contaminating our water and soil. In addition, they are using open burning that is releasing toxic gasses into the air such as dioxins and furans which are extremely hazardous and called persistent organic pollutants that stay in the air and are the cause of numerous chronic diseases, respiratory illnesses, cancers and genetic mutations.
  • Currently, the government is promoting the acquisition of two mega incinerators for the whole country as a solution for the garbage crisis. Nonetheless, developed countries are moving towards reducing the use of incinerators and landfills and encouraging circular economy stressing on waste minimization, reduction and recycling, which create huge opportunities for unemployed work force and generate revenues for the economy.
  • We need to take immediate action to stop incinerators in Lebanon for the sake of our health and the health of our loved ones. The health and environmental risks from incinerators is high especially if they are mismanaged.
  • We urge the government to adopt sustainable waste management strategies and plans focusing on waste reduction, reusing, recycling, and composting.

Please sign below our petition if you agree that incinerators have negative environmental and health impacts and if you want to enforce a law for solid waste management and recycling.
