I have three children - one just finishing college this semester. loans are about a third for him, $40000 was our contribution and rest in scholarship. we won't have our loan paid off before our twins enter college in 2015. we could use that $5000/yr to help our law abiding children get the education they deserve. instead we get a meager $250 a semester from nys in aid. that pays for one book. thanks nys.

Responsible students in NY who are funding their own educations and are following the law are taking out thounsands in student loans. It seems misplaced to be giving education for free to people who already are a drain on society.

So are we to award those who commit crimes, rather than those individuals who are upstanding citizens and pay their taxes? They say more education funding will help prevent repeat offenders. What if this FREE education ends up enticing more individuals to commit crimes, just for the added benefits that they receive in prison (free food, medical, jobs that pay, free rent and cable, oh and of course a free college education). I am in debt from students loans and need to also find a way to fund my child’s education, yet these criminals get a free ride for doing wrong? How backwards is New York?
