Columbus was no discoverer. He was an opportunistic, mass murderer who ultimately destroyed our ancestors' way of life and virtually stole our land.

I dont understand how any decent human being can continue to ignore the behavior of Columbus. Today he eould be considered a terrorist and rightly so.

As we daily hear of the atrocities being committed in the world around us, it is an absolute disgrace to the history and memory of the indigenous people of the Caribbean and North America, that any statue be erected in the honor of Cristobal Colon. His reign of terror heralded a slave trade that would last for centuries, and brought about the destruction of the Taino people. His crimes were no lesser than those committed by Hitler and his Nazis, no lesser than those being perpetrated by Isis today.

Im really dissapointed of this news. Columbus was a murdered, brought diseases and genocide. He took advantage of our Tainos ancestors good hearts and stole from them. Why honor a man with that history under his name? What's so honorable about Columbus? Shame on them.

As a Native Americanliving here in the US I am appalled by the even the idea of any form of honor bestowed upon Columbus to say nothing of a statue in his honor ! We are currently trying to get the US government to re-name "Columbus" day here celebrated on October12th to "Indiginous People's Day". Native Americans do NOT celebrate "Columbus Day" because it is meant to honor the man(as well as many others )who was responsible for murder, rape, and pillage of our Native ancestors as well as opening a way for others to carry out the same and opened up the floodgates for the beginning of the slave trade. Do we want to honor him and his followers in any way? No, I think not.
