Seems to me that the accounts of Cristobal Colon's endeavors have been thoroughly rewritten. So now the revisionists will have their monument. Remember that no Taino monument would be complete without a Carib burger stand and a shrunken head store.

How can you claim discovering something, when you find something else while getting lost? No credit for getting lost. No credit for finding something that was already there.

We say “NO!” to the proposed installation of the Christopher Columbus Statue in the Arecibo, Boriké (aka Puerto Rico)! As Taíno, descendents of the first Indigenous People to meet Columbus, there are simply not enough words to express our level of disgust with this vile, morally offensive, disrespectful, environmentally destructive, and grotesque statue and project which honors a vile symbol of slavery, exploitation, murder, rape and genocide. The proposed installation of the Christopher Columbus statue and the “Columbus New World Theme Park” is, without a doubt, morally offensive, environmentally destructive, and costly. Yet, despite the negative social, environmental and economical impact, the Mayor of Arecibo and Pan American Grain Co. are willing to invest over $20 million dollars on the “Columbus New World Theme Park” which includes a 305 ft, 660 ton Christopher Columbus statue. THE SOCIAL IMPACT: The installation of the status is morally offensive as Columbus is now viewed as a harbinger of genocide and slavery. Columbus was one of the first instigators of the Transatlantic slave trade, and set in motion one of the largest Holocaust and intentional efforts of ethnic cleansing known to history. Over 95 million, indigenous peoples throughout the western hemisphere were enslaved, mutilated and massacred as a direct result of his words and deeds. Columbus represents the sad reality of the ongoing genocide against indigenous people throughout the Americas and all of the Caribbean. This proposed theme park is aimed at increasing tourism however, since the celebration of Columbus’ legacy is morally offensive and disrespectful to the people of Boriké (aka Puerto Rico), the Caribbean and the Americas, it will actually have the reverse effect. In fact, if Columbus were alive today, he would be put on trial for crimes against humanity. In addition, the proposed location in Arecibo is on the same street as the "Cueva del Indio" [Cave of the Indian]

Why I'm disgusted about this statue. -> Several accounts of cruelty and murder include Spaniards testing the sharpness of blades on Native people by cutting them in half, beheading them in contests and throwing Natives into vats of boiling soap. There are also accounts of suckling infants being lifted from their mother’s breasts by Spaniards, only to be dashed headfirst into large rocks. Native's had to supply at least a thimble of gold dust every three months and were given copper necklaces as proof of their compliance. Those who did not fulfill their obligation would have their feet burned until the marrow began to drip or had their hands cut off, which were tied around their necks while they bled to death—some 10,000 died handless. In a single day, De Las Casas was an eye witness and wrote about it as the Spanish soldiers dismembered, beheaded, or raped 3000 native people. In the early years of Columbus’ conquests there were butcher shops throughout the Caribbean where Indian bodies were sold as dog food. There was also a practice known as the montería infernal, the infernal chase, or manhunt, in which Indians were hunted by war-dogs. These dogs—who also wore armor and had been fed human flesh, were a fierce match for the Indians. Live babies were also fed to these war dogs as sport, sometimes in front of horrified parents.
