The Introduction to Philosophy course I took in order to fulfill a core objective helped broaden and strengthen the education I'm recovering as a Biology student. The benefits of studying Philosophy expand throughout the entirety of one's life, and should continue to be taken as a core objective class here at UDM.

There is not a more crucial time to train and foster deep thinking people in our society. U of D Mercy needs to retain and even develop this critical path of study.

It is ludicrous to even suggest that philosophy not be a part of the core curriculum. Students need to develop (or often times acquire) their ability to critically think. Philosophy is absolutely instrumental in this. A core curriculum without philosophy is akin to a banking model of education, producing spawn in the same vein of Pavlov's dogs.

An education in philosophy or containing philosophical study and rigor is essential to a well-rounded mind; further, the skills learned in introductory philosophy courses (e.g. ethics or logic) are both applicable and essential to all areas of study. Philosophy is not just the study of philosophers but the study of how to arrive at the truth, regardless of subject.

A strong Philosophy department is vital to UDM's ability to fulfill its mission. Even moreso than other colleges, UDM must continue, by example, to represent the Ignatian ideal: that knowledge and belief are inseparable. A weakened, less-comprehensive core threatens that relationship and puts us further from that ideal.

the study of philosophy is so important to the full experience of a liberal arts education... cutting these classes just goes along with the academic business model that is destroying the arts across the board...

Though a graduate of the accounting program, I found that my core philosophy classes were integral to developing my ability to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems. I oppose any effort to eliminate philosophy from core curriculum.

I am a 49 year old veteran who had started all over again so late in life. When i had started at U of D Mercy i was told it would be difficult and maybe i should choose a local school like Baker. I choose U of D mercy for the reputation of higher learning. I did not want to take electives to complete my reinventing myself do to the fact I had already been around the world. As i took my elective; such as drama, history, biology, i had found the importance of the subjects and it gave me a better understanding of things around me. No class at this university has shaped my outlook or future as clearly as Philosophy has. Please do not cut or short change curriculum in the Philosophy department.

My time in the UDM philosophy department has helped me personally and professionally. I didn't intend on becoming a philosophy minor, but it has been so rewarding. Please don't limit this opportunity for new students!

Because of the Philosophy Department at UDM, I was able to go on and get my MA in Philosophy at another Jesuit University.

Graduate at UDM in 2005. My philosophy classes were core to the mission of the university at the time. Sad to see it in danger.

Philosophy is essential for a well-rounded education. It has taught me how to defend my arguments logically and constantly reminds me to keep an open mind. Losing any part of this department would further the increase of career ready grads instead of world ready grads.

Philosophy has been a central part of my education here at UDM. In fact, I was not originally going to be a Philosophy minor had I not taken the cores first. This minor is one of the main reasons that I have an interview at medical schools, and have further been eligible for certain programs. Do NOT take anything away from this great department!!!

having philosophy is a major deal for me for the most Because it is my minor.it is devastating that is program would even consider taking this away from students. it's almost like mocking philosophy and What it stands for. if it was not for philosophy alot of other programs would not exist. philosophy should not be underestimate it because it is a huge program the impact a lot of students including myself. to take away for losophy is to take away an higher education which will pay off in the long run.

why would we want to lose a class dedicated to critical thinking? I frequently reference my philosophy courses even though I work in basic science lab.

Philosophy has roots in all aspects of life. I continue to find sciences, politics, health care, law and religion, just to name a few, stemming from philosophical discussion and arguments. Without this, students will fail to fully grasp an understanding of our everyday lives.
