The council backed down and the centre stays. Incredible result for our neighborhood. We will keep watching to ensure they keep this promise.

Wandsworth Council plans to close the current York Gardens Children’s Centre and universal stay and play for 0-3 year olds will no longer be offered at the site.

Please sign this petition to let the council know that we demand:

1) that a universal stay and play service for children aged 0-3, supervised by Early Years professionals, continues to be offered on the York Gardens site.

2) a commitment that Children’s Centre services, including universal stay and play, will be continuously provided throughout the period of the Winstanley Estate regeneration on the Winstanley or York Road Estates.

3) that the number of universal stay and play sessions stays the same or increases.

The Council are running a consultation until Monday 3 December which you can fill out here: https://haveyoursay.citizenspace.com/wandsworthcsd...

All Mercy Foundation Centre clients with young children uses York Garden Children's centre frequently. Well, I've been in environment for as long as 10 years. I feel it will be a disservice and a huge set back to the community and the children concerned if the centre closed down now.

This centre has served my family for 14 years helping two of my daughter's with their first encount with other kids. It has given myself and my wife free time to do other important things during the day.

It is well known that children who have access to play at an early age, especially those living in high rise blocks are more prepared for primary school. It is also good for the mothers to have a place to meet and to give each other mutual support.

Please keep open this valuable service which services a less privileged community. Cuts should be targeted, precise, and fair. This targets the poorer and most in need. There are very affluent parts of Wandsworth that get new street paving while the Winstanley gets cuts. It’s not the right thing to do.

The families in this part of the Borough need inclusive and supportive places to go. Universal stay and plays can work with local schools to ensure excellent and continued provision for local children as they begin their educational journeys. Removing this provision would impact educational as well as social opportunities.

When closing the Battersea Park Sure Start and One o clock clubs and adventure playground assurances were given that stork Gardens would Keep their children’s centres! That commitment to the local community must be respected now.
