My daughter graduated from the JMP in 2012 and went on to become the chief resident at the Sutter Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Program where she is now completing her second year. Most of the JMP graduates go on to a primary care specialty. The loss of this program would be a major loss for the health care ecosystem.

BlueShield/cross of CA has a surplus reserve of $400Billion dollars according to the Internet. They should be funding this program.

Save the JMP. I have taught in the JMP and mentored many students from the time of their days in the JMP, through graduation and continuing in their careers. The case based learning approach was dynamic, innovative and avant garde when it began at the JMP. This approach to learning is superior to the traditional didactic approach and creates better clinicians. The year of research and masters training, with the production and defense of a master's thesis, has created a new "army" of physician scientists who have gone into clinical research careers across medicine. Many are the leaders in their field today. We need more JMP programs, not less. Rather than disbanding the program, step up to the plate UCB and appropriately fund the program. Plus, get out and appeal to philanthropists who understand the power of the JMP approach.....go the BMGF, the Zuckerberg Foundation, Warren Buffet, John Martin, the former CEO of Gilead, etc. it's easy to cut; it's harder to promote. Do the right thing! I graduated from UCB in 1973, attended UCSF for residency and medical school and did a preventive medicine residency through UCB SPH and the State of California. I worked for Alameda County Health Care Services Agency, was the Medical Director of Central Health Center for 10 years; the Medicla Director of the East Bay AIDS Center at Alta Bates for 12 years and was VP, Clinical Research and then VP, Public Health and Policy at Gilead Sciences. Since retiring from Gilead in 2009, I have served as the CMO of CHRCO (now UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland), as a Senior Advisor on Science and Policy to the Divsision of Viral Hepatitis at the CDC, Atlanta. In addition, I consult for a number of biotech companies in the infectious diseases arena and serve on the Boards of both biotech companies and non-profit health care and infectious diseases related domestic and global organizations. The JMP's emphasis on primary care is producing mission-driven doctors who go on to serve under-served communities, which we desperately need. The JMP's unique program is important not just to the students, alumni and community of the Bay Area — it's a national model for case-based medical education. Please don't make a short-sighted budget decision and lose this national treasure!

I am a first year student in the JMP. I came to the JMP because it is a home for future physicians who want to serve vulnerable members of their communities, to conduct research that matters to these communities, and to learn medicine in small teams, driven by their curiosity. Among the medical schools across the country that I visited as an applicant, the JMP stood out as unique and spirited-- producing rigorous and humane doctors, most of whom enter primary care. Along with all of its strengths, the JMP costs relatively little to run: only $39,500 per student per year. This is much lower than even an old 1996 AAMC estimate of the average yearly cost of providing medical education per student in the US -- about $70,000 adjusted to 2016 dollars. The value of this beloved program is extremely high, and to withold funding is a mistake.

Those who say one medical school is like all others echo those who believed
If you've seen one redwood tree you've seen them all.
One can only make such statements from a place of short sighed naïveté or worse.
Those trees, like this institution, are

As a new med student going into an MD program that highly incents that students obtain a MPH along with their MD (in the form of a complete tuition waiver for the MPH classes), I hope this program is able to stay afloat.

More programs like this are needed, not fewer. It's so rare to find physicians who are aware of social and environmental influences on health. Moreover, the program doesn't lose money for SPH. I strongly support continued funding.
