The crosswalk is staying open. It was a long fight against people who refused to listen but we finally forced them to change course. Please keep an eye on the area because we need to make sure they actually follow through on keeping it safe.

SAVE THE METRA HARLEM AVENUE PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK AND SAVE LIVES in Berwyn! BNSF, with the blessing of Metra, is permanently closing the pedestrian crosswalk (the crosswalk is approx. at Maple Avenue), in conjunction with the current platform construction. They state "safety" is the reason and are directing people to Harlem Avenue to cross. We say KEEP THE PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK OPEN because directing people (commuters, students and local walking traffic) to Harlem Avenue poses a BIGGER RISK of injury or death to the many people who previously used the pedestrian crosswalk. The car traffic on Harlem Avenue is extremely busy and dangerous at the tracks. Many drivers disregard the traffic lights, especially at Harlem and Stanley; and other drivers heading North on Harlem cause dangerous situations when they find themselves stuck on the tracks because of someone ahead waiting to make a left turn into Riverside. The cars dart out of that lane and cause accidents (as was just witnessed about 6 p.m. on 9-3-09). There is also no Crossing Guard posted on Harlem at the tracks for the school children who previously used the pedestrian crosswalk.

Seeing this kind of movement is exhausting but it reminds me why I started this fight in the first place. I am tired of watching our safety be treated like an afterthought. We are not giving up now.

I walk this everyday to get to the train and making us use Harlem is just asking for someone to get hit. Idiots fly through that light constantly.

This is ridiculous. People are just going to jump the fence anyway because it saves time. Keep it open before someone gets hurt.

METRA NEEDS TO WAKE UP. Safety my foot, they just want to avoid the cost of upgrades. Put the crossing back.

Just saw two cars stuck on the tracks at Harlem last week. Why would they force pedestrians into that mess? leave the maple crossing open.
