Since 1972 there has been a small community of dome homes called Baggins End at UC Davis. This small community was formed using money from a regents grant, not from UC Davis money. It is self-sufficient and students learn the value of community work, sustainable living and many other valuable personal and lifelong lessons living in Baggins End. Now the university wants to shut down Baggins End citing code violations which were not mentioned since 1972. The "Tiny House Movement" is an fast growing group of individuals all around the world interested in sustainable development of ecologically sound homes and communities. We oppose the closure of Baggins End because it teaches young people that they can never create something that is the right size for them, and leaves less of a carbon footprint, but instead must purchase their housing space from those interested in selling larger spaces than are needed using far more resources than are required. UC Davis, along with many other forward thinking universities have been leading the way in sustainable housing, smaller carbon footprints and learning to live collaboratively with the environment. This has been one of the reasons that students and parents have chosen these universities from other possibilities. Why change what is right? Let Baggins End remain.
