The 21st Century has brought with it an abundance of new creations and ideas. 50 years ago, who would've thought there would ever be a small device that allowed you to instantly connect to people all over the world? Who would've thought that the answer to any question you may have would only be a click away? Who, for gods sake, would ever have imagined that the successful reverse engineering of the brain would not just be a possibility, but only a matter of time? Yet ironically, it seems that, despite the rapid advancement of technology, or maybe because of it, something very important has been lost. Something so crucial to society, that without it we would not even be this successful a species. I am talking about the craving of knowledge. The desire to learn, to innovate, and to surpass everything and anything that came before you. Curiosity. Civility. Honesty. Todays youth has become a disgrace to the great accomplishments they have inherited from their ancestors. Wherever you go you see kids swearing, drinking, taking drugs, disrespecting older generations, and who knows what else. Tell me, have you ever seen one of todays kids help an elder across the street? Have you ever noticed their disinterest in exceeding academically? Do you honestly believe that within the next 30 years there will be another Einstein? Another Ghandi? Another MLK? Do you see a member of Generation X revolutionizing any field of medicine? Of course, this is quite the generalization, and surely there must be quite a few among the current teens who still dare to dream and who will do things older generations aren't even capable of imagining yet. But in the end, no matter how you look at it, these future pioneers and leaders are few. It is because of this general decline of interest in learning and creating rather than indulging and consuming that those who wish to be different, those who want to show that they are capable of great things must constantly protect the few public bastions of knowledge, of truth, and of reason that have not yet been surrendered for the entertainment of the uneducated masses. The Discovery Channels and especially the Science Channel are one of those strongholds. While shows such as "An Idiot abroad" and "Big, Bigger, Biggest" have already started to spread this cancer of stupidity over to this marvelous TV Station, we must not give up hope. The majority of the Science Channels shows still have some educational value, and we must fiercely defend them. It is thus that I ask you to join me in the fight for knowledge. Let us come together and remind the Discovery Staff that there is more to this great network than just money. They must stick to their values and keep doing their part in educating those with a desire to learn.
