Diversity; choice. These are the modern mantras. Why does it not apply to art training?

Diversity is critical.

SCA is the preeminent art education institution in Sydney. A merger would inevitably dilute SCA's excellence, its commitment to conceptual rigor, its global importance in the production and dissemination of advanced art. A culture that compromises its art and squashes its art education is a culture that sinks into ignorance.

Independent and diverse art schools are essential in an increasingly antagonistic social and political environment. Please do not silence more artists. We need more voices, not less.

Homogenising art schools is not the way to support 'excellence'. The diversity of these individual institutions is an important part of Sydney's wider art community and I fully support this petition.

In a time of unprecedented environmental change, and chilling social transformation, Universities need to be expanding their range of critical voices not reducing them. The closure of SCA shakes our arts ecosystem at its core.

The proposed ‘merger’ with UNSWA&D will not lead to a centre of excellence but reduce the vitality of art and design education and research in New South Wales and Australia

The value of art education is beneficial to a healthy vibrant diverse and reflective society. Don't destroy this amazing institution!

I support diversity in higher arts education

Don't make SCA suffer for the university's mistakes. Diversity is healthy, and necessary, to the visual arts!

Each art college has offered a slightly different pathway of development just as seen in the medical faculties of the different universities. In the long run a society that celebrates diversity is resilient and innovative and can adapt more readily to change.

I am astounded at the lack of foresight in the closing (or 'merger') of SCA. In a city in which contemporary art education should be at the forefront of investment considering the world-class art institutions it houses (MCA, Sydney Biennale, Artspace, AGNSW) this decision is nonsensical and will irreparably damage the Australian arts infrastructure nationally and its image globally.

Art schools produce genuine leadership, creative, independent, enthusiastic humans aware of and in touch with their milieu. This emasculation of the arts is an attempt to emasculate cultural and social leadership in Australia.

Invited for a short residency in 2007, SCA allowed me to introduce my work, and further my art art project in Australia but also to create a strong network. Great place to keep alive and independent !

Nurture Sydney's creativity; don't stifle it.

As the government calls for Australians to embrace innovation and creativity, the University of Sydney intends to close a school whose primary goals are to develop innovation and creativity. Oh the irony.
