The ADL is a tremendous organization and the positive effects of their work have been almost too numerous to count. However, by classifying this goofy frog as a hate symbol the ADL legitimizes those who have appropriated his likeness for terrible ends. Matt Furie's creation is rooted in positivity and love (and pulling his pants all the way down when he pees) and declassifying Pepe as a hate symbol is a crucial step toward reclaiming Furie's original intent for the character.
