Let's fight to keep Adams Morgan's distinctive look and personality. The plaza is a very popular, sun-filled place to spend time. It's well used. Let's make it more beautiful and usable instead of turning it into another generic high rise.

This is the center of Adams Morgan. While the plaza space could be improved, it is used extensively as a neighborhood meeting place, for a beloved (and growing) neighborhood farmer's market, and for local festivals and demonstrations. It's loss would have a major negative effect on the neighborhood.

The plaza in front of SunTrust at the corner of 18th St and Columbia Rd is the heart of Adams Morgan. It definitely needs renovation to make it more inviting. But it functions as a rare open space where people can meet, visit, relax. In addition to the Saturday farmers' market, I've seen spontaneous community events happen there. I've seen amateur bands perform for passersby. On a Friday or Saturday night, you might see a drummers' circle gather and entertain the crowd they draw, or a spontaneous dance party, where passersby stop to watch and then join in. The relatively new open space at the opposite corner is welcome, but is nowhere near as conducive to public use. It is a busy pedestrian intersection. The project analysis proposing this site as an alternative space for the farmer's market dramatically oversimplifies the foot traffic of the space. Heavy foot traffic coming down Calvert splits either to cross at the intersection or to round the corner and continue East on Columbia Rd. There is also a bike share rack and a bus stop adding further complication to the traffic patterns. Squeezing a farmers' market into this small space would be totally chaotic. It would be like placing the farmers' market into the center of the intersection and forcing the cars work their way around it. The Plaza in front of Sun Trust allows civic functions to happen well out of the way of pedestrian traffic. Over the years, it has proven itself a useful part of Adams Morgan's urban fabric and deserves to be preserved as a public space in the face of the pressure for development in this increasingly dense neighborhood.

The plaza is the heart of the community serving to permit people to meet and enjoy the neighborhood. Losing it would destroy an important aspect of AM.

Who owns the plaza?
How are the neighborhood Commissioners voting? How involved is the Mayor on this project? We need to develop a score card for Commissioners, Councils, and Mayor and have it published so citizens know how to vote on future elections based on their performance regarding the no-rich citizens.

I don't oppose redeveloping this site, I just think the current rendering of the PN Hoffman bldg are too high and too deep, and doesn't fit the historic look of the other bldgs

We can achieve population density and a plaza "clean up" without going up six floors plus penthouse and tower. I hope decision makers will not approve exceptions to existing zoning and historical preservation rules that would allow a building this high, deep, and wide.

Another construction project at 18th and Columbia Rd would overwhelm the neighborhood. The ongoing Hotel construction across the road is already taking every available spot parking space. The City Council needs to oppose any construction on this corner.

I hate this petition, why even have it. PN Hoffman owns the property. Everyone else who oppose this should instead throw their efforts behind 1. Less Crime, 2. Better Schools.
