quite simply it is not fair to current students not offer the papers needed to finish the degree they are enrolled in!

These students have made the decision to spend their time and money to complete this degree at the University of Otago and to have the powers that be cut it from under them is disgraceful. They showed commitment to Otago, now the University needs to show some commitment to their students.

It is a very shortsighted move by the university to close down design studies when the town that they are based in is poised to become a hotbed of technological innovation in the near future. We are going to need designers, so closing down the department will be just as good as shooting themselves in the foot.

I think it's downright unfair to let students begin a degree at this university and then not let them finish it here, especially as there was no warning when these students began their degree.

I have been working in the field of Design for a number of years all over the world, using a number of different skills gained from across the disciplines of Design Studies and Design for Technology. Employers everywhere comment on how diverse and forward thinking my education was. Out of a team of friends that completed various degrees in the late 2000's, I am one of the only graduates still passionately working within the fields I studied. There is no doubt that this University has slowly been falling behind when it comes to offering courses that support the exciting, evolving landscape of academics throughout the rest of the world. The loss of Design Studies and Design for Technology is tragic enough for the future of the University of Otago, but not allowing its students to complete their courses is just pathetic.
