We understand and appreciate that this show is based on a book series about a love triangle, and are aware this show is essentially about the same. Love triangles, when done well, can be entertaining and moving but not when you can't respect the characters. We feel that the characterization of Elena Gilbert on the show is very different from the books (particularly in Shadow Souls), as is the characterization of Damon Salvatore. Elena Gilbert is a smart, loyal, strong woman and she is the backbone of the show; we are hopeful that any future relationship between Damon and Elena is pursued in a way that is true to Elena's characterization thus far.
