This is an appeal by the citizens of Dubrovnik to those of you all over the world who know and love our beautiful, walled town founded in the 7th century. Though UNESCO acknowledges the rare magnificence of our landmarks when it declared Dubrovnik a World Heritage Site in 1979, the organization now needs to hear from YOU that intervention is needed in the face of the GREED and DISRESPECT demonstrated by developers and short-sighted bureaucrats today. Time is running out and we can only save our sacred walls and landmarks with your help. Even if you have never visited us, but understand the vital historic importance of landmarks like ours, we implore you to act. Despite the World Heritage designation, local municipal authorities demolished parts of the ancient Pile section of the town (including its 17th century orphanage) for poorly planned underground parking. Additional plans call for the demolition of landmarked buildings for a bus depot that will devastate the entire area. Permission was NOT given by the Croatian Government in Zagreb nor UNESCO, however, these unconscionable activities are planned to continue with the help of the local authorities and collaboration of architects and civil engineers together with the Department for the Preservation of Dubrovnik.
