Yes, Calhoun was a slave owner; he was also a U.S. Congressman, U.S. Secretary of War, U.S. Secretary of State, twice U.S. Vice President under 2 different administrations, & universally considered one of the three greatest U.S. Senators in history! So his life of service to his state & country in these politically correct times is reduced down to slave owner (the fallacy of presentism strikes again)? What a farce! I say don’t change anymore history until they change the names of all things Washington starting with the U.S. Capitol b/c George owned slaves too, as did most of the rest of our founders. They were also HUMAN like the rest of us.

We go to church at Wesley Monumental Methodist, and love the square. I also love history…the good and the bad! The Jubalee group should go to a new area to build their monument. History is what it is!!

Millions of people from all around the world come to see HISTORIC SAVANNAH as it is…. It would be disingenuous to do anything to change Savannah. Leave it as it is… you cannot, should not change history.

I was born and raised in Savannah, and had the misfortune to move away at the age of 52. That being said, I have stayed very involved with the daily activity of my hometown. Changing or erasing history is a very dangerous and slippery slope to go navigate. Use this as a teaching tool about the time period. If you change it, who’s to say 15-20 years from now another “offended” group comes along and they then want to “erase” the new named square?

History cannot be erased! It is forever a part of our great country’s legacy and that certainly includes the rich fabric that makes up Savannah and Georgia. So much of the truth has never been taught for generations! Much of what has been taught is full of holes and misinformation! That is why we find ourselves where we are today. It is a fallacy that we can ever undo history by removing monuments and erasing names or renaming streets and squares. Let ALL of the truth be told even when it reveals an ugly side to humanity BUT it is foolish to believe that we can rewrite any of it to suit a particular political agenda. Today the “revisionists” are working overtime. They are not interested in telling any more truth than what they seek to destroy and then rewrite as a new narrative. Let’s keep Calhoun Square as it is and let’s get ourselves more educated as to who John C. Calhoun truly was! The truth will always prevail but we have to fight for it and not allow it to be diluted or misrepresented.

An awfull precedent. No end in sight. Half the names of the squares and streets in town could be changed by such woke criteria, which is the apparent objective of people from not here.

Renaming Calhoun Sq is a rather stupid idea. You may recall, it's the good, the bad and the ugly of history. history. I certainly wouldn't want to provide a name a tax payer expense for free advertising to the Jubilee Touring Company. That would be a terrible conflict of interest.
I would strongly suggest that we study history, learn from it and not repeat it like the stupid people.
