Stop trying to erase our Nation's History. The first slave owner in The United States was a Black man, Anthony Johnson, who owned White Slaves!!! Want to start with slavery? Let's start there!!!!

I Concur Wholeheartedly With This Petition. It Is Past Time For The ‘woke’ Crowd To Crawl Back Under The Rock From Whence They Came. As A True Native Savannahian With Heritage Going Back To Founding Days, I Abhor Any Such Intention/Move In An Attempt To ‘Rewrite’ History Via So-Called ‘P.C.’!!!

The city government has no right to re-write history. I oppose changing the name of Calhoun Square or any other traditional or historic name or marker in Savannah.

His most notable contribution to this country was being a super racist vice president who was a contributing factor to the secession of the south. Let them name it after someone more deserving.

As a docent in Savannah Georgia, history is the one thing we learn from so we don't repeat! I cannot judge Mr. Calhoun because I did not know him, only God can. The times in context shows he was ignorant, greedy and vulgar in human rights! But changing the name would only lose a very important teaching experience.

If you do not remember the past you are doomed to repeat it. It was a different time in our history. Do we remove all monuments and named buildings that were built before Segregation was ended?

This cancel culture MUST end. Those who attempt to rewrite history are doing a disservice to society. History, good and bad, presents an opportunity for us to learn and grow. Oppressive governments/societies often begin by destroying history.

I believe we should not mess with our history. Renaming Savannah's treasures (our squares) would be disenfranchisement! Leave well enough alone.
