Many of the squares are named after people connected to slavery. Apparently City Council has accommodation for Colonial slave owners and advocates, but not a Civil War successionist, which is the real issue. It is ironic that the last U.S. President to own slaves was President Grant, former Commander of Civil War Union Forces.

The civil war was a terrible time for both sides but as part of history and is part of Savannah's history and yes John Calhoun was a slave owner but he made me contributions to the city of Savannah and that is why they named a square after him you should remember History no matter what instead of trying to forget it and that's why his name lives on in Calhoun square

Tearing down history indoctrinating the kids how much are you getting paid to do all this? Trying to turn our city into a ghetto drug attics on every corner over building garbage every where we need new city council in office before they raise our taxes were we cant afford our homes

Savannah is one of the most historical cities not only in the state of Georgia, but in the United States. Removing ANY historical monuments, statues, plaques, etc. is not only illegal, but also ignorant. No one can "change" history by removing it. Just doesn't work that way.

I am not in favor of changing the name of Calhoun Square in Savannah Georgia.

History does not change because you remove a statue or rename a square. What happened, happened. Acknowledging history does not mean you agree with it. That is logic 101. But renaming would be a feeble attempt to change what you can't. Change is the effect you can have on the future. And that future is best served by learning and discussing. what went before us. You can't do that if you try and erase the past, the truth. Why would we want to jettison the opportunity to have those discussions and learning opportunities? Plus it's the national "HISTORIC" district. So many efforts are already being made to destroy it with variances and hotels and Disney-like thinking. Plus, I've also heard about the failed attempts to change the name according to the proper procedure to do so. In other words, the people have already spoken. I've also heard that even though the people have spoken, certain powers that be at City Council want their way and are trying to devise their own scheme. Do they represent the City and its people or their personal agendas? I don't live in Calhoun Ward, but close by and in the Historic District.

I am a frequent visitor and potential new home owner in the Savannah region. I strongly oppose any actions that would change or cancel our history in the Savannah area. Our history is designed to learn from the past and not to forget what happened...but most importantly, not to repeat it. I fully support to maintain the Calhoun Square name and all of the other Squares. The rich history of the area and how the Squares are today is what attracted myself & husband to this beautiful city. I'm sure this holds true for the millions that visit the area every year. The city must consider the crippling effect that these negative changes will have on the town's tourism.

As a downtown resident I fully support the ideas expressed in this petition and will be sharing it in the hope that it gains additional attention.
