Ben Klayman is a young adult with a severe form of Autism. He and his father, Wayne, and two siblings have rented a home in Oakdale, MN owned by the 3M Corporation since 1999. They have paid over $180,000 in rent over the fifteen years they've leased the home. In May of 2014, the Klayman's received notice by registered letter that 3M would not be renewing the lease due to the home needing repairs and the company wanting to scale down their real estate division. The home would be torn down after the family vacated, according to a company representative. The company insists that the family has been outstanding tenants and that the decision is strictly business and not all personal.
This home has been ideal for the Klayman family, (particularly for Ben who has a severe developmental disabilty) due to its large yard, private location, semi rural setting, and reasonable rent. To the 3M corporation it's a property, but to this family it's home - the only home the family has had, as they were all living apart due to divorce prior to their finding this particular home for rent. Ben loves his home and the family cannot afford to move. Furthermore, finding a similar property at the rent the family pays, ($1035.00 per mo.) will be close to impossible at current market rates. And moving itself after fifteen years, with its accumulated possessions including large therapy equipment will be an overwhelming task for this family who are living alone with no outside assistance, and the head of the household now at age 62.
We are petitioning the 3M Corporation to allow the family to continue leasing the home until such time as the father can no longer care for Ben at home, or, give the family some option to buy the property so as to relieve 3M of their obligations to repair and maintain the property, but still allow the family to stay. Perhaps a purchase agreement which would give 3M the right to buy back the land should that be of concern to them. The family wants to stay, regardless of conditions. Therefore we offer the following signed petition for your consideration.

By my signature, I respectfully petition the management of the 3M Corporation (Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing) to reconsider their decision to not renew the lease of the home that Wayne and Ben Klayman have occupied since 1999. I ask that 3M allow the Klayman family to renew their lease or offer them the option to purchase the property at fair market value. Due to the extreme hardship that relocating will present to this family, which includes two special needs young adults, I endorse this petition and do so by my signature below.
