Anacostia National Park at Poplar Point is on the chopping block. A soccer stadium giveaway of this parkland threatens to pave over all but 70 acres of this historic, publicly owned, riverfront park. Over 100 years ago, the US Senate envisioned Anacostia National Park as a great park to serve the east side of the city as Rock Creek Park serves the west side. This parkland giveaway would never happen to Rock Creek Park and amounts to a civil rights violation that will steal publicly owned resources from the community. There is an alternative. Existing plans for commercially zoned land just outside the park would provide economic benefits, including a grocery store, shopping, and other services needed by the community AND this development would fund the parkâ
