I completely disagree with the decision to close Amandla Charter School. As a cofounder of Amandla and the founding Dean of Students, I was drawn to the Renaissance 2010 mandate to create new school options for the families in our community. I believe we created one of those quality options for our families. Anyone who has actually followed the entire evolution of Amandla Charter School knows the current depiction of the school as “chronically underperforming” is 100% inaccurate. In my opinion, the SQRP rating system is flawed and hurts schools with smaller enrollments. Scores can be heavily skewed by the data of just a couple of students and does not always accurately portray what is actually happening in the walls of a school (both district and charter). CPS officials have not actually stepped foot in Amandla to confirm what they “believe” the data is showing them and are making life changing decisions based very little information. They are taking away the freedom of choice that was mandated by Ren2010. Not all families view charter school options the same way. Many families seek out Amandla exactly because it is a small neighborhood charter school and want a choice in between the district schools and the large network charter schools that are currently dominating the Chicago educational landscape. I encourage all Amandla stakeholders to hold their heads high. You are not the problem. #SaveAmandla

Sending support from an American teacher all the way in Kuwait. "A child without education is like a bird without wings."

I oppose charter school expansion in Chicago, but closing charters, especially innovative ones, on the basis of a flawed rating policy is wrong.

Amandla really changed my life, I don't think that I would even be at the this great place in my life with out the help of all the teachers and staff there.

#doitforthekids # saveamandla My child has attended Amandls School since the 6th grade and the support she has received is phenomenal...the encouragement...the help to get involved in programs and receive resources outside of Amandla but connected through Amandla...relationships with parents teachers and students are closely knit...teachers are accessible throughout the day at school and at night while at their homes with their families. We have access to personal cell phones....they travel with our youth to bus stops to provide safety , stay over to assure children can participate in afterschool programs when their ride is going to be a little off ...its just not school work but the school is concerned with the students home life and making efforts to support in anyway they could to benefit the students....it would be a travesty to close Amandla. My child was already achieving cps goals and the staff of Amandla challenged her and pushed her more...THEY BELIEVE IN HER AND EXPECT AND THEY ARE DETERMINED TO SEE HER SUCCEED. I AM AMANDLA..WE ARE A FAMILY PLEASE DONT CLOSE ARE SCHOOL I am proud to say I have a child that attends Amandla High and came from Amandla grade school....because she is college ready #saveamandla

Amandala is changing lives of those who truly deserve it. Don't let politics decide the future for these students...afford them the same advantages you want your own children to have. Keep Amandala open!!

As a proud parent of a Amandla student, we need to keep this school open. This is one of few that actually cares for the students and the students care for the teachers. These are great students who have a bright future ahead of them, but if you take their school (family) away from them you are doing more harm than good. Most of these children have been with this school since the beginning. Let them finish, allow them to be safe and let them learn in a familiar and comfortable environment.
Stop shutting down inner city schools to only pack children on top of children. It seems as if your purposely wanting them to fail. Your closing of the first 50 did not work out well, but you want to close 10 more. Give our children a chance, stop telling them they are worthless.
