What more with today's Herald Newspaper report that "An ARV shortage hits Zimbabwe?" Additional infections are just complicating the problem. We are living a time bomb. Lets stop more infections. I support this visionary cause!

Thanks for your comment Celestine. What you have forgotten is that in spite of the obstacles you raise, infections continue unabated. The infected will invariably fall sick and will actually spend more on medical treatment. Currently all those falling sick will be on treatment for their entire lives. It's exponential expenditure growth. Stopping infections cuts the growing health bill anyway. If you do the numbers, prevention will only cost a little more temporarily on those that currently do not know their HIV status while those who know are either officially or privately on treatment. In the medium to long term, prevention will reverse the formula from growing costs to shrinking costs and that is where we want to be.. In any case, waiting for the ideal economic conditions is a wild goose chase. Think about it!

I believe the thesis that with universal testing followed by immediate treatment of HIV infected individuals can drastically reduce or even eventually eliminate HIV transmission has been amply demonstrated by the mathematical model published in 2009 by Dr Reuben Granich of the WHO.
For Zimbabwe however, I believe the introduction of mandatory testing without attending to the following challenges will not succeed:
1. Capability to treat all individuals found to be HIV positive
2. Capability to put in place all the requisite measures to ensure efficient systems in the protocols of pre- and post testing support
The above demand that the country be in a position, financially and manpower-wise to undertake the above issues. Today Zimbabwe like many African and third world countries is relying on donations, largely from the Global Fund, to support its ART (Anti Retroviral Therapy) programme. In the current situation, I do not see the economic situation being able to address the above challenges.

As a woman and mother, my heart bleeds at the infection rates being published at varsities and in our babies. women are already on mandatory testing when we fall pregnant, why not the man? Please protect us if you love us! Not after being infected but before! This is our fight , all of us for the future generations. Lets not allow our enemies to exterminate the African race!!!!
