In 2022, the Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade decision, eliminating the 50-year-old constitutional right to an abortion. While this issue is subjective, there is no denying that the removal of this law signifies a regression into a time when women had limited rights. Pew Research Center reported that 61 percent of Americans believe abortion should be legal in all or most circumstances- so why is our country acting against the interest of the majority? Abortion is banned in almost all circumstances in Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia. Women in these states are in grave danger. If we allow these bans to continue, we risk our unalienable rights to life, liberty, and happiness everywhere. We cannot stand idly by and watch this utter disregard for our freedoms occur. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Many brave women fought for these freedoms once before, and we must follow in their footsteps to ensure that all of their hard work did not go to waste.

This is a national health emergency. This is not a time for motivational speeches or urging people to vote in November. We must call upon President Biden to use his power to lead a national response to these repressive circumstances. We first call upon Biden to condemn the Supreme Court's Decision and use his executive power to urge members of Congress to undertake legal reforms. Furthermore, we urge Congress to enact a law that makes it a violation of federal law for any person to criminalize or impose a penalty on women who travel to legal states for an abortion. We also call upon the Department of Justice to challenge the abortion bans since federal regulations supersede state policies.

Finally, we ask for nationwide and total congressional support for the passage of the Women's Health Protection Act: This act "creates federal rights for patients and providers to protect abortion access and creates federal protections against medically unnecessary restrictions that undermine Americans' access to healthcare and intrude upon personal decision-making." This act would ensure that the right to abortion is codified into federal law.

While we still have the right to free speech (for now), let's mobilize together by signing this petition that signifies our support for the reinvigoration of women's total and complete inalienable rights.
