Is the Drill Hall doomed? Wellingborough Civic Society has for some time been concerned about the fate of this attractive building. The Council state the Drill Hall has gone too far for any other viable option apart from demolition and we believe it to be only a matter of time before this building is completely gone. The Drill Hall has been in Council ownership for some years and has been allowed to fall into disrepair whilst in their care. This building is constructed from Northamptonshire ironstone and is visually pleasing and attractive. There were many other buildings in and around the town centre constructed from ironstone, many which have gradually been demolished leaving Wellingborough with only a small handful of ironstone buildings still standing. Does Wellingborough really want to lose another of its interesting and attractive buildings, no doubt to be replaced with metal boxes and faceless windows? Surely our Town Centre deserves to have sympathetic architecture, visually pleasing to the eye, something to lift the spirits on a grey day. Why are all our buildings being demolished, to be replaced with brand new boxes? Surely these buildings could have and still can be reused? Wellingborough has lost so much over the years, beginning with the building of the Arndale/Swansgate centre, please don't let it continue with the demolition of this fine building. STAND UP Wellingborough for your heritage! DO NOT let it be taken from you. HELP US preserve this building for future generations!
