The arts are of more value to students and society in general than all the sports money is spent on. CCSD needs to reevaluate how they use money, as do the schools. The leadership that devalues arts education clearly does not use basic intelligence when making their decisions. Arts education improves mathmatics, spacial skills, verbal expression, and so much more.

I went to west Ashley one year. One. My last week there, Mr. Cumback wrote me and my friend up for "skipping" before the bell rang because I was on the sidewalk across from the pond looking for my lost money. It was a windy day and I was scared it had flown a bit away. He was in his personal vehicle screaming at us from his truck. I was respectful even though I knew I was in the right. I asked to phone my mother. He said no. I asked him to phone my mother so she would know what was going on, gave him her number, he never did and my mother got 4 calls that day about me not being in class. My mom had to call security and have them check the cameras because when Cumback ordered us to ISS the rest of the day, he never checked us into the system and the people in the office told my mother I had never arrived even though she had dropped me off that morning. The entire time I sat in ISS. For no reason.
Earlier this school year, 2 years after leaving west Ashley, the same friend I "got into trouble" with needed a ride home. She asked me to pick her up in student parking. When I arrived, school wasn't out yet, and I saw a girl I work with in the parking lot. I had not been talking to her 2 'minutes before SRO's and Mr. Runyon arrived and searched them. They all had alcohol, however, myself and my friend who drove me didn't. We weren't even connected to anyone of those people at all except for my work friend. They threatened us with trespassing and asked for our names to pursue legal action. Later, Runyon graciously said he would let us go. However, he wanted to search our vehicle. He did it. HIMSELF. He had no right, and on top of that, he, by rules, needed an SRO with him to do so. West Ashley has let itself go downhill by the hands of Runyon. If you let orchestra go you're just gaining another headline. Why take something positive out of an already dying school? You'd be dumb. I'm so glad I left this school. Stop cutting the arts, you're not giving kids the opportunity to develop their full potential. You're also lessening their chances at college assistance.

Very disappointed to hear about this decision, not only from a musician's perspective but also as a former student. Having a strong music and art department is just as important as a strong sports program in a school system. Every child learns differently, thinks differently, and develops differently. While living in the South means that sporting culture is more prevalent at times than art culture, this does not give a school the right to rule out arts education as a viable, healthy, and impactful education for students. Students pursuing a creative outlet they enjoy and can grow in their abilities and friendships in should be able to do so, uninhibited by the lack of funding towards these departments. I would like to see where the money is going instead...

Music is vital to our lives because it is a universal language. Anyone in a position of authority of any school system should understand that without these programs to offer our children, their minds and their futures will become more and more scattered and chaotic. Music brings people together and simultaneously promotes individualism and self worth. Now explain to me why any school system wouldn't want to offer this? I am a musician. My children are musician's. Music makes my kids want to succeed in every aspect of their lives. This situation is embarrassing for this school as well as the State of South Carolina.

That school is going from one of the best in the area, to the school everyone wants their kids out of. I am actively looking for a different school, one with an active arts program and non-idiots in charge.

The WAHS strings program is ending for 5th graders that are only getting maybe 20 min of strings 2 a week , on the other hand the high school strings if cancelled/removed, the kids in 5th grade will go to 6th,7th,and 8th then will have to stop and 9th because there will be no strings program , so the 5th graders should wait until 6th grade to go to strings and it will also save the high school strings so I and many others can have a future
