I am former president of the student veteran association and would utilize the offices for all of my meetings, event planning, counseling, and general studying. This office served as a home base for my during my time at UT Austin. I never felt welcomed or wanted in other shared spaces for my degree because of the huge age gap between the other students and myself. The VMAS office served as a place to talk to other students that were going through a similar experience and the place where I meet my best friends. WE DESERVE A SPACE!

I served as president of this SVA and the support was outstanding. Not sure why this knee-jerk reaction is taking place. It’s sad to see an institution treat veterans so poorly when they use to provide so much support for student veterans. Sad to see veterans treated like this.

As the former Director of VMAS and the Adviser of the SVA for the last 12 years, it pains me to see what has been done by a select few bad actors at UT to diminish the 15 years of work that went into making UT #1 in Texas for veterans. University leadership has an obligation to serve this community that sacrificed so much for this state and the nation. They are failing that obligation

I'm really confused—who made the decision to vacate the campus offices, and why? SVA and VMAS have played a vital role in my experience and success at UT. These organizations are essential in ensuring that veterans and military-affiliated students have access to the resources they need. Forcibly relocating VMAS without any consultation feels like a complete disregard for the organization and the students it serves. I'm extremely frustrated by this decision.

While the university continues to create state-of-the-art facilities for our sports teams and remodel the Tower, it seems a second thought couldn’t be given to the student veterans on campus when it comes to a dedicated space.

I’m a transfer student from Chicago. I served 9 years in the military before my health started to be a concern. Throughout those years I would hear word that Texas was the most military friendly and military loving state. I chose to move to Texas for that reason; and the SVA and VMAS were major contributors in my choosing and staying at UT- Austin, as was for many of my peer and close friends that I had the pleasure of meeting through the SVA. Recent leadership has turned the SVA around, all for the veteran students and all military affiliates to be blindsided like this with no justification is not right. We deserve an explanation.

Having space for VMAS and SVA has given a lot of veterans, dependents, and affiliates the inclusion, wellbeing, morale, and relations we’ve gone through in the military. It is a safe space of well-rounded individuals who’ve served or were affiliated with the military. We ask you to give our space back or give us a space similar to that of what we’ve had. As a University that has publicly stated they are the best in Texas in supporting Vets, it’s very troubling to hear this decision. I look forward to hearing from officials as to why they have chosen to deny Veterans and current military members a space on campus.
